MOVING UPWARD OR MOVING FURTHER

Coke studio, Great effort to create and preserve wonderful and soul enchanting music. On other side there came a series called satymev jayate as effort to make people aware social (and may be increasing) problems. Both the programs are crucial for television viewership transition faced by Indian broadcasters.

For first time, comparing coke studio and satymev jayate seemed to be an insane effort to me but you can see the other side of coin when you give it a second thought. Coke studio and saymev jayate obviously technically different series, but for me they are doing great job of changing society.  Coke studio changing society? How? …. Through music!!! Yes, coke studio is making effort to bring in the songs which are highly philosophical and they fuse it with such stream of music that it directly touches to emotions. Lyrics are not, were not and will not be the constraint to understand those songs and music.  

Such emotional realizations about self, god and community can lead to people build up people’s moral strength and can provide self-regulation for behavior; of course it is slow, but it is sure and respectable social change where people are encouraged to conduct ethically right things with administering them. It has ability to take social beings to higher standards of life and create aspiration for evil free world.

There is totally inverse story in terms of satymev jayate. This programme is highly biased to certain groups (like government, doctors, higher class etc.)And it justifies this biasness through claim of proper research. If there is proper research, why would one need to target certain groups of society. Of course these groups are not doing well to the society but that doesn’t mean that they should be considered bad. Creating newer definitions of good and bad can increase disparities in society.  

Satymev jayate is doing same thing of touching emotional buds of people but its impact is limited to drawing room. After programme gets over, people gets back to lunch and head towards their Sunday evening. Hardly they think to act on issue which was being discussed (sending sms or email is not acting).

I should not go further criticizing such attempts but I’m sure that my readers are smart enough to understand ‘real’ things and act on that, so by now concluding this post I would like say that the fundamental difference between coke studio and satymev jayate is; coke studio is trying to raise the standards of society, its attempt is to take society upward while satymev jayate is trying to take society further. The real responsibility rests on our shoulders, how we want to see social change, moving upward or being same & moving further.
